When the subject of a sentence is composed of two or more nouns or pronouns that are connected by ‘and,’ use a plural verb.

Example: She and her friends are at the fair.

Example: Joggers and sprinters require supportive running shoes.

When two or more singular nouns or pronouns are connected by ‘or’ or ‘nor’, use a singular verb. Example: The book or the pen is in the drawer.

Example: Neither the professor nor his assistant knows the answer.

When a compound subject contains both a singular and a plural noun or pronoun joined by ‘or’ or ‘nor,’ the verb should agree with the part of the subject that is nearer the verb.

Example: The boy or his friends run every day.

Example: His friends or the boy runs every day.

Neither the professor nor his assistant knows the answer.

The words ‘each,’ ‘each one,’ ‘either,’ ‘neither,’ ‘everyone,’ ‘everybody,’‘anybody,’ ‘anyone,’ ‘nobody,’ ‘somebody,’ ‘someone,’ and ‘no one’ are singular and require a singular verb.

Each of these hot dogs is juicy.

Everybody knows Mr. Jones.

No one appreciates harsh criticism.

Someone likes you.

Do not be misled by a phrase that comes between the subject and the verb. The verb agrees with the subject, not with a noun or pronoun in the phrase.

One of the boxes is open.

The team captain, as well as his players, is anxious.

The book, including all the chapters in the first section, is boring.

The woman with all the dogs walks down my street.

Nouns such as ‘civics,’ ‘mathematics,’ ‘dollars,’ ‘measles,’ and ‘news’ require singular verbs.

The news is on at six.

Note: The word dollars is a special case. When talking about an amount of money, it requires a singular verb, but when referring to the noun dollars themselves, a plural verb is required.

Five dollars is a lot of money.

Dollars are often used instead of rubles in Russia.

Nouns such as ‘scissors,’ ‘tweezers,’ ‘trousers,’ and ‘shears’ require plural verbs. (There are two parts to these things.)

These scissors are dull.

Those trousers are made of wool.

Expressions such as ‘with,’ ‘together with,’ ‘including,’ ‘accompanied by,’ ‘in addition to,’ or ‘as well’ do not change the number of the subject. If the subject is singular, the verb is, too.

The President, accompanied by his wife, is traveling to India.

All of the books, including yours, are in that box.

  1. Great times

I couldn't believe it when I opened the door! Standing there, in the chilly evening air, was my best friend, who I hadn’t seen in over a year. I stood frozen for a moment, my heart racing as memories of our countless adventures flooded my mind. She had flown all the way from another state just to surprise me for my birthday. The excitement bubbled up inside me, and I rushed forward to embrace her tightly. We both laughed, tears of joy streaming down our faces as we shared stories about everything that had happened since we last met. It felt like no time had passed at all. We spent the evening reminiscing, eating cake, and planning our next adventure together. This surprise was the best gift I could have ever asked for, reminding me of the importance of friendship and the joy of being reunited.

    An unexpected encounter

I can still remember that day in April when my friend and I were riding along a country road, when suddenly, the peaceful scenery was interrupted by the sound of a loud crash. We skidded to a halt, our hearts racing. Curious and concerned, we hopped off our bikes and rushed towards the source of the noise. As we approached, we saw a small car that had veered off the road and crashed into a tree. The driver, a young woman, looked shaken but thankfully unharmed.
We quickly called for help, staying with her until the paramedics arrived. It was a surreal moment, realizing how fragile life could be. While we waited, we chatted with the woman, trying to keep her calm. She shared stories about her recent move to the area and her dreams of starting anew.
Once the paramedics arrived, we felt a mix of relief and sadness as we said our goodbyes. That day taught us about the unpredictability of life and the importance of being there for others in times of need. As we continued our ride, the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the fields, reminding us of the beauty that still existed in the world.

    1. I couldn't believe it when I opened the door! It was her, my high school sweetheart, Jenny. She looked the same as she did ten years ago, when we said our goodbyes and went on with our own paths.
Here I see her again at our high school reunion, beautiful as ever. I went up to her, she seemed happy to see me. I talked to her for a bit and I realized she was still in love with me after all this time.
It was time to take back what I had lost all those years ago. I confidently asked her out on a date like good old times, she said yes. The date went well and we ended up going on many more and our relationship started getting serious.
This was 2 years ago. We fell in love and got married! Always believe in love!

    2. I can still remember that day in April when my friend and I were riding along a country road when suddenly I saw a hitch hiker on the side of the road. I thought about stopping but my mind said to not as I thought about all the horror movies I've seen involving this scenario.
As we got closer to the person we realized it was a woman, my friend said that she's harmless and there's nothing she can do to us. I stopped and I asked for her name, she said it is Caroline. She said she had to get somewhere ten minutes from her, so I thought we wouldn't even notice her.
When almost got there, she started asking us weird stuff like: "Do you live alone" and other questions that made us shiver. We tried avoiding them as we were close to her destination. Suddenly, she started screaming, we looked back at her and she wasn't there. We did arrive at her destination, it was an old 18th century house like you see in movies, but it looked abandoned. Out of nowhere, we heard the scream again as she was waving at as from a room in the house. We sped off immediately as we saw her.
I hope it was all in our heads and we never have to experience that again. But it is a day I'll never forget.

    The mysterious box

I couldn't believe it when I opened my door! Sitting on my doorstep, a mysterious wooden box with weird carvings all over it. There was no one around and no note attached to it. Only me, the box and a chilly breeze that made shivers run down my spine. I looked at it, inspected it. There was something unsettling about it. Nonetheless, I decided to take it inside. I placed it on the desk in my room and thought about opening it. But then again, I had no idea what could be inside. A message? A key? Perhaps whatever was in there was alive? Or dead?
I gathered up all my courage and opened the box. There was a blinding light coming from it and then I heard a frightening screech. I should've closed it, but something was telling me to look inside. My curiosity got the best of me and as the odd light dimmed I saw a hand written letter and a rusty key. I picked up the letter and read it. It said "Never lose the key and you will never lose yourself.". I thought the quote was weird, yet nice, but who would give this to and why? Do they know something that I don't? I put the key in my pocket and closed the box. Then, I went to grab my phone to call someone or google what this could mean. That's when I saw a weird door in my own home that I've never seen before. "Could this day get any weirder?" I thought to myself as I stared at it, wide eyed.
I tried to open the door. It was locked. I tried to unlock it with the key and it opened. In the middle of the dark room, there was a wooden table with the same carvings as the box that had a shiny light blue crystal orb placed on it. I went inside and walked towards it. The door slams shut behind me. Seeing as I had no other option, I went to the globe. It was flashing slightly. I thouched it and a deep voice spoke "Be careful. Don't let them change you.". Another quote. Where were these coming from? I left the room, thankfully, the door was unlocked. When I walked out, the door closed and disappeared, only some dust and the orb rolling on the ground left behind. I pick it up and nothing happens this time. I placed it on my shelf and the box next to it, but kept the key on me at all times. The words from the letter and the orb stuck with me. Maybe I'll find out what it meant in the future.

    Space jelly

I can still remember that day in April when my friend and I were riding along a country road when suddenly we heard a loud crash and we saw a blinding light coming from the field beside us. A dense fog rolled out from that direction, swallowing the field.
My friend Daisy and I got off our bikes and that's when we heard it: some kind of strange weeps coming from the middle of the feild. We left our bikes and decided to go check it out. As we walked closer the weeping grew louder and we spotted a fairly large crater and what looked like the remains of a small spaceship, no bigger than one of our bikes. I wanted to leave, but Daisy couldn't bear to abandon the weeping creature with big eyes and greenish-blue skin wearing a spacesuit and immediately rescued it, pulling it out of the spaceship ruins.
The creature, who introduced itself as Nova, calmed down and told us what happened. There was a malfunction in her spaceship's system and she didn't manage to fix it in time. Daisy felt empathy for the little alien and offered to help fix her spaceship. One problem, the only tools we had on us were the ones in my old toolbox: a screwdriver, some screws, tape, scissors, a pair of pliers and a ruler. It wasn't much, but Nova said it would be enough to get her back to her planet because it wasn't very far.
We helped her fix her spaceship. It was easier than I thought it would be. Nova explained that aliens make their spaceships easy to fix to make travelling easier. She was very happy and thankful and even gave us a jar of space jelly that me and Daisy savoured later. It was delicious. We watched as Nova took off and left with a slightly wonky spaceship. We rode away with our bikes and a new unforgettable memory and friend.
