I. A few nouns, such as economics, mumps, measles, or news end in “s” but are considered singular. You can tell these “s” words are singular because if you take the “s” away, you don’t have a noun. For example, economic and new are adjectives that describe a noun. Mump and measle just don’t make any sense.
Example: Economics is her favorite subject.
II. Indefinite pronouns that always take a singular verb form:
anybody either neither
one anyone everybody
nobody somebody anything
everyone no one someone
each everything nothing something
Ex, Is everything clear ?
Somebody has broken into the house .
III. Some nouns only have one form. They are uncountable nouns.
e.g. money
- There is no money in my bank account.
- There is a lot of money in my bank account.
III.1 Many uncountable nouns refer to substances.
e.g. chocolate, water, coffee, milk, sugar, salt, cheese, bread, rice, wood, glass, plastic, soap, toothpaste.
- Do you have any chocolate?
- The milk is sour – let’s make cheese.
- Rice is only edible when it has been cooked.
III.2 Many uncountable nouns refer to abstract ideas or emotions.
e.g. love, sadness, happiness, education, knowledge, and grammar.
- Money can’t buy love.
- We like to experience happiness.
- This education is priceless.
III. 3
- There is a range of nouns that are uncountable in English but are countable in other languages.
These include: accommodation, advice, baggage, behavior, bread, chaos, damage, furniture, information, luck, luggage, news, permission, progress, scenery, traffic, weather, and work
